The Funerary Chapel of Rubens won the contest!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you manage to find your way in this church, you \u2018ll get a big surprise! The hustle and bustle of the city immediately gives way to a feeling of calm. The grand dimensions in width and height are in harmonious proportions; those who are sensitive to this, will feel uplifted rather than depressed.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As soon as St. James&#8217;s Church and Rubens&#8217;s funerary chapel are fully accessible, we will include this important stop in our walking programme. For the time being, you can have a look at his <em>&#8216;Madonna surrounded with the saints<\/em>&#8216; online (<em>linked to our Dutch website page with reproduction)<\/em>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/topa.be\/sint-jacob\/beschrijving\/grafkapellen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>https:\/\/topa.be\/sint-jacob\/beschrijving\/grafkapellen\/<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With Rubens\u2018s house being on the Wapper, Saint James\u2019s had become his parish church: the youngest child he had with Isabella Brant and the five children from his second marriage were all baptized here. The font dates from 1624; so it is an authentic object from Rubens&#8217; s time!<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The family was also tied together by death: Helena Fourment, who died at the age of 59 in 1673, \u201c<em>by a long and unfortunate illness<\/em>&#8221; (in the original French \u201d<em>par une longue et f\u00e2cheuse maladie<\/em>&#8220;), was laid to rest in Peter Paul\u2019s burial chapel; she has not been buried with her second husband. Her daughter Clara Johanna followed her in this grave in 1689, as well as Clara\u2019s husband in 1699.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the south aisle, on the wall against the heavy pillar under the tower, you\u2019ll find the epitaph of Anthony van Dyck\u2019s teacher, Hendrick van Balen and his wife Margaretha Briers; the funerary monument shows van Balen\u2019s own painting <em>&#8216;The Resurrection of Christ&#8217;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jordaens&#8217; s painting, <em>&#8216;The Calling of Peter&#8217;<\/em>, can momentarily be seen in the Snijders&amp;Rockox House, in our North Route.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Route East continues: leave the St. James, turn right and right over Sint-Jacobsmarkt, until you turn left into the Korte Sint-Annastraat.<br \/>\nThrough the student neighbourhood you walk across the Ossenmarkt to the Rodestraat, to the entrance of the <a href=\"https:\/\/rubens-antwerpen.be\/en\/home\/east\/beguinage-church\/\">Antwerp beguinage<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sint-Jacobstraat: St. James&#8217;
